April77

Posted by French Blast on 1/26/2009 05:45:00 PM 0 comments
A very nice shop and concept rencently opened in rue Saintonge, in Paris, APRIL77 is a clothing brand created in 2002, totaly rock, urban, trendy and inspired by rock groups of the 70's.

The shop looks like a huge luxurious wardrobe all made of wood.

In addition to the clothing brand, April77 record is a music label. As they put it on their website "Our clothing is music and are music lives on our clothing"

Basically, if you want to get APRIL77 music, you must either buy an clothing item or a 7-inch vinyl. Both will give you access to a code that will allow you to download a single from one of their artists. GREAT!!

Museum of broken hearts

Posted by French Blast on 1/24/2009 06:00:00 PM 0 comments
You might start thinking we are getting very Esplanade minded, but let's say that we are discovering this aspect of Singaporean culture thats not so underground.

Getting closer to Valentines day...Esplanade presents a strange exhibition as part of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2009 : Museum of broken relationships

It features objects given by anyone that are the remains of a broken relationship. The Museum has been created in croatia with the idea that objects possess "holograms of memories and emotions"
Next stop of the exhibition : 14th Feb (Valentines' Day!!!!) in San Francisco at the Root Division Gallery

The coolest Obama T-shirt

Posted by French Blast on 1/22/2009 05:37:00 PM 2 comments
This was the event of the week all over the world. But this blog is not a political blog even less an economical blog. Otherwise we would speak everyday about the impact of the crisis in Singapore and in France. Oh, but I can't resist to link this scary article about the future of expats in Singapore.

Coming back to the major event of the week, I ffffound a funny t-shirt today to represent what happened this week in the United States and especially in Washington!

Inflatable street art by Joshua Allen Harris

Posted by French Blast on 1/20/2009 05:01:00 PM 0 comments
Joshua Allen Harris has created some fantastic street art in New York. In fact he positionned shopping bags on subway street grates that animate animal forms when the bags are inflated.
I don't think the message needs explanation if I put together those different key words: polar bears, shopping bag, dead, live! His art promote ecology. You would have guessed it!

As promised, in our blog we try to uncover the nice and trendy in Paris and Singapore. We have already shared with you some of our favorite shops in Singapore. Back from a couple of weeks vacation in Paris, I will share with you my discoveries of up and coming Paris shops.

I will start with Surface to air, a boutique and creative studio featuring cutting edge design and services from collective based in Paris.

I like the quality of the materials, the discret design, the shop, the collaboration with Music group Justice and the result of it in a leather jacket.

Night on the Waterfront

Posted by French Blast on 1/17/2009 12:00:00 AM 0 comments
After wanting to go there for a while, last night we finaly made it to the Night on the Waterfront at the outdoor theatre concert.

Its a series of free concerts produced by Esplanade, Singapore's performing art center. I've had the chance to meet one of the person in charge of selecting the artists for this show, it really convinced me of the interest of this initiative.

The idea is to give a place for local artists (Asia) to perform the chosen artist should have a blend of international music and their local music...at least that's how I understood the concept.

Last night's session was Smooth Grove III, the group playing on stage was Reverse Gravity, I must say it was very pleasant jazz and grove music...but a little disapointing regarding the cultural blend of musics I was expecting. Nevertheless, lets say it was a first attempt, and we will check out more concerts to get the right opinion.

If you want to check out, sunday January 17th features The Force. Thats what Esplanade website says about them : "The Forces come out with a new-age breed of music that infuses Chinese music with different musical and ethnic elements."

Those of you who live in Singapore must know Hadji Lane and its designer stores, we have already mentioned soon lee in our previous post about the other Singapore, but there are many more shops to be discovered. We can't list all the shops of the street but Whiteroom, Collage, Sup and I’m Wuyagege are some of them.

Strolling down this street, some pictures I made that could give you a feeling of this nice area.

The four seasons in 40 seconds

Posted by French Blast on 1/12/2009 12:46:00 PM 0 comments
When we've heard about the cold in France these last days, we did not miss winter at all. But it's also weird to be always in summer without seeing any changes in weather during the year. Eirik Solheim realised a beautiful video in time lapse. He took regularly the same picture during the year and sum them up in a 40 seconds video.

The result is beautiful and we can see the amaizing progress of nature through the seasons, by watching this video:

Louis Porter and beautiful pictures of Beijing

Posted by French Blast on 1/10/2009 09:37:00 PM 0 comments
Louis Porter is an english photographer based in Australia since 2001. In his portfolio I've been very interested in two set of photos: Escalator and Wires at night - Beijing.

I like the photos of Escalators because I found that it's a very good idea to stand at the top of the escalators waiting for a new model every 2 seconds. Moreover I like the background of those photos.

The photos of Wires at night just fascinate me. You can read those words which have gone through those cables before appearing on your screen. It's amazing, isn't it?

What a Charming Wall

Posted by French Blast on 1/04/2009 05:10:00 PM 0 comments
The Charming Wall is a New York Gallerie with an incredible website. It is interesting not only for the artists featured...see below but also for its display, each time you select a menu, the whole page moves to uncover a new athmosphere. My favorite artists are : Heiko, Doug Boehm and Bailey Saliwanchik.

Wondering who are the vibrant artists in Singapore? Me too... I'm sure there are many. Recently arrived in Singapore, I am trying to understand what is the "edge culture" here. Who are the artists who wants to make us reflect on our lives, thanks to there creativity?

I have found one name that I would like to share with you : Ketna Patel, most likely those of you who are Singaporean know here, she has taken part to the Art Singapore fair.

Take a look at her work...
